1. 9:15: Nadine is out again today. So are a lot of other people it seems. Rich isn't here, and there are quite a few cars gone. I'm spending the morning playing around in word and seeing how well it converts different docs to html.
2. 1:30: I've been observing Rich since this morning. He's having trouble ghosting the new desktop. He's going to work on the laptop now.
3. 4:15: Rich just left. I was helping him make various boot disks to see if any of them would load the right driver. None did. Right now I am looking through the cd server for urb form lists. Jane is going to go through and cross off what forms she doesn't want available on the web.

1. 8:15: Nadine is out today, so I'm here early. At least I get to leave a little bit earlier too. I'll get home in time for Knight Rider!
2. 8:40: Rich is back, trying to figure out the speaker. He got a call that claims had a strange message on their computer, so he's left again already. He started the setup for the anti-virus before he left though.
3. 9:02: I have a meeting today with Howard and Jane. I can't wait to get a new project. I think I've done about as much as I can to the website without some more info. Nadine told me yesterday that the two people that we need to meet with have been on vacation, so Howard will try to make an appointment not next week, but the week after. Steve told me last night that they are impressed with me, which makes me very happy. I think it's kind of a blah website, but if it makes them happy it's alright with me.
4. 12:13: Just kind of been killing time, doing things to the website that don't really need to be done. I did however go through FrontPage's reports to see what pics are not used, broken links, etc. NYMU only gets 10mb, so taking off all those extra pics should help.
5. 3:00: Just got out of a meeting with Howard and Jane. I'm going to be putting some forms online. Some of them agents will be able to fill out online, others they will be able to print out. Jane is coming up with all the forms, and early next week Howard said that we can start to inventory them.
6. 4:00: Observing Rich. He's trying to ghost a desktop

1. 8:30: It's a good thing that I decided to post my internship log online as a backup. My other internship log is a word document that somehow reverted back to an older version, so that I have nothing listed after Feb. 27.
2. 8:30-10:00: I've been looking around at tutorials of flash. Flash is something I really would like to learn. I have the program, I just don't know how to use it! Someday when I have time (ha!) I suppose.
3. 10:00-2:00: Working with Rich installing XP on a laptop and a desktop. I think there is one more of each that needs to be installed as well. He also showed me their wire closet and told me how they organize the ports to rooms, etc.
4. 10:15: Nadine also showed me how to set up a meeting in Lotus Notes and invite people. I set up a meeting for tomorrow at 2:00 in the main conference room with Howard and Jane to discuss putting some forms into online versions.
5. 2:00: Found a javascript to put on the internet links page on the intranet. Instead of having buttons to take them to the search engine page, this script will search right from the same window. It's pretty slick.
6. 2:20: Ahhh! The search itself is working fine. For some reason the navigation bar is showing up twice! Stupid frontpage!
7. 2:35: Nevermind...it had two body tags in it...I thought I had not copied it over from the script...anyway, it's all fixed now.
8. 3:00: Since I'm going to be working on forms, I thought I would refamiliarize myself with all of the goodies. Looked through one of my reference books.
9. 4:25: Observed Rich try to get the speakers to work on one of the new Dell desktops. At first we didn't think that it had speakers, but they have a little tiny one. They are the smallest desktops I think I have ever seen. We couldn't get any sound at all to happen in Windows. XP detects the drivers and reinstalls them everytime he uninstalled them, but still no go. Rich took out the memory and restarted, and it did give an error beep. Just no application sounds.

March 11, 2003
163 Hours Completed

1. 8:30-10:30: Added agent search engine to web page, similar to the one on the intranet. This one has a few more search options, such as town
2. 10:30-11:30: Field-tested the search engine on the NYMU site. It's having some problems that the other one didn't have, and I'm not sure why
3. 11:30: Met with Howard to discuss other projects. Two that I will be working on soon are an update to a Sterling powerpoint and then making it available on the web. Another is to put some of Underwriting's forms on the web so that they can be transmitted on the net
4. 12:00-2:00: Search engine now works. After much searching, I found a setting that was looking for a page that exists on the intranet, but not on the website
5. 2:00-4:45: Updated internship logs and started preparing for next evaluation submission
March 10, 2003
155 hours completed

1. 8:30: Changed network/windows password
2. 9:30: Theme is picking up a pink color from somewhere that flashes as you navigate through the pages. I found it was set as the background color, even though the background is a picture file. Set it to white instead, so that it is less noticeable
3. 9:30: Set up the link to the insurance glossary so that it opens in a new window
4. 10:00: Added a stylesheet to make links change color when hovered over with mouse
5. 10:30: Added alt text to all the images
6. 11:00-12:00: Amy Becker gave the IT staff a demo of Chubb's agent interface. They are going to a paperless system on the first of April, and this is their first step. All of the agent reports, such as cancellations and reinstatements, are all on their website that the agent logs in to. It is a similar idea to what Sterling is implementing. Even though Chubb is a very large company, Sterling is only about 6 months to a year behind them
7. 1:15: I fixed an incorrect link on the internet links page on intranet
8. 1:30: Checked and titled pages that were untitled
9. 2:00: Added background fade javascript. Doesn't fade to black, just stay white for some reason. I think it may be conflicting with another javascript already on the page. I'll look for another script from another source
10. 2:30: I got the background fade to work, but it doesn't look good on the page. Took it back off
11. 3:00: I am looking for an alternate background effect to grab the users attention when they come to the page
12. 3:30: I changed the css so that when the links are hovered over, they will change to the exact opposite color of the link and the background. The background is white and the link text dark red. When hovered over, the link becomes white and the background the dark red
13. 4:45: I can't find an appropriate background effect.

146 hours completed

1. 8:30-11:00: Finished entering keywords for all of the county pages
2. 11:00-2:45: I've been going through and changing some of the keywords. As I went through and tested the search engine I found some things work better than others, so I am changing a lot of entries. I found some spelling errors and omissions as well
3. 2:45-3:00: I wrote a few helpful hints on the search page, and more on the results page to help users find what they are looking for
4. 3:00-4:45: Searched randomly to see if proper results came up. I'd say that it's about 90% accurate. If user's use the search tips and guidelines, it should work great
March 6, 2003
138 hours completed

1. 8:30-10:30: I am searching fro a javascript that will allow me to have an internal search engine on the intranet page
2. 10:30-11:30: Finally found a very basic script with a lot of changes that need to be made, but it is very customizable that way. Fortunately, the programmer included an instruction file
3. 11:30-11:45: Entered some test keywords and other required information into script to see if it works
4. 11:45: It works! I'll enter in the rest of the information now
5. 11:45-4:45: I've been entering keywords. I'll be able to finish up tomorrow
March 5, 2003
130 hours completed

1. 8:30-9:00: Added a table with the idea of putting the scripts in it to line them up together. However, just placing the table there pushed them over so that they lined up on the right side with each other
2. 9:00-10:30: Added animated bullets to the insurance information page
3. 10:30-12:00: Added dancing picture script to holiday schedule page on intranet
4. 12:00-12:30: Added internal links on employee pages on web and on intranet to make navigation easier
5. 1:15-1:30: Tried to alter theme to change backgrounds. Not working properly
6. 1:30-2:00: Added internal links on company info page
7. 2:00-2:30: Added internal links on services page
8. 2:30: Trying to get themes to work, but it won't save changes for some reason
9. 3:00: Finally got backgrounds to work properly. It wouldn't take a color for a background in the theme, only a picture. So I created just a square of the color I wanted in Image Composer and saved it as a gif. I used that as the background
10. 3:00-4:45: Trying to get another dhtml script to work with very limited success. I'll work on it tomorrow
March 4, 2003
121 hours completed

1. 8:30-11:00: Found a better way for users to navigate through the agent listing, so I added that script, then tested all of the new links
2. 11:00-12:00: Prepared website for demo to give to Nadine and Howard
3. 12:00-2:45: Searched for clock and scrolling javascripts for page
4. 2:45-3:15: Gave demo to Howard and Nadine
5. 3:15-4:45: Added two scripts, a clock script and a date script. Couldn't find one that I liked that had both in one. They work, but I can't get them to line up properly. I'll work on it tomorrow.

February 12, 2003:

Started my internship today. Here are the tasks I completed:
1. Observed back-up procedure
2. Assisted in printing documents/forms
3. Assisted in creation of an account (mine)
4. Observed updating of web page
5. Given quick overview of Lotus Notes
6. Observed use of Unix and changing permissions
7. Began setting up my workstation

I was introduced to Nadine Felter, who will be supervising me to begin with. I toured the building, and was impressed with the size. There are three main insurance departments, with other service departments, including IT also housed in the building
